Gps stands for Global Positioning Satellite. GPS is a satellite based navigational system, developed to use with defense applications but now it is available for general people. Gps tracking system could be used in different ways. Gps system is not only a receiver installed on the car. There are 27 earth orbiting satellites. The auto GPS system gets its signal from 24 out of 27 possible satellites.

Presently gps technology is extensively used for vehicle tracking, called gps auto tracker. A gps tracking system has a receiver placed somewhere on the vehicle. If it is used for navigation purpose, then it could be placed on the dashboard of the vehicle. If it is used for tracking vehicles, then it could be placed somewhere under the vehicle.

The gps device placed on a vehicle constantly transmits signal, this enables satellites to locate a vehicle or direct the movement of a vehicle. In case of gps auto tracker, the gps system sends the signal to a computer where software will show the location of the vehicle.

Gps tracking system is also becoming popular as a navigation aid. If you are heading on an unknown place, then the gps system can direct you to reach there. So when you use gps system for navigation purpose, you need to tell the system about your destination and it will exactly tell you how to get to your destination. This will avoid lot of conflicts.
